Thumbs up Mandriva 2006 (Free Version)

I have used many linux distrobutions to try to find the best for me. I was a long time Debian user, then Ubuntu. I recently tried Gentoo, I didn't like it. I tried Slackware, I did like it, and it was very fast. I quickly got tired of the no-dependency-handleling (even with swaret) part of it.
Then I found my self downloading Mandriva 2006 DVD iso.

Once I booted the dvd, I was presented with a pretty gui installation.I did my own selection of packages, I picked Gnome for the desktop environment. Once I went through that, I booted into Mandriva. I was really surprised.
It booted just as fast or faster than Slackware (mabey because if different init scripts?).
Immediatly I added new repositories that I got from http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ and did my updates. After a healthy reboot it was time to play around :classic:
Mandriva's control center is amazing. You can easily manage hardware, mount points, security options, and more with a gui. I found it stable and it worked well.

Overall I am really impressed with Mandriva 2006 Free Edition, but with minor configuration.
I do not recommend using kde with it as it not very nice. It is unorganized and bloated. Gnome seemed to work nicely with Mandriva. You also need to add the extra repositories to get better functionality (only add the plf ones if you are not in the US ).

I may have to try Ubuntu Dapper when it comes out though

Yeah I have tried Mandriva 2005,

I wasn't all that taken with it, Bloated and a bit disorganised. Very resource hungry, looks pretty though. That is why I went back to Mandrake 9.2, very nicley set out, fast and organized.

But the Perfect Distro is a Mandriva fork called PCLinuxOS, very little configuration smaller, cleaner, more organised and faster. Love it if you havent tried it yet sevoma, I suggest you try it

I have tried it and it is pretty good. The guy Tex that owns it does some optimizations to the packages too. It is pretty cool but I don't like kde. You should check out 2006 with gnome, its great.

Did you try slapt-get with the gui gslapt, just like synaptic and works just as well.
Mandrake/Mandriva has always been a good distro, it's ideal for users wanting something that just works, the downside is using it requires little knowledge of linux so it's not great for those wanting to learn.

How does it require knowledge of Linux? It is one of the easiest distros around...

Do you not understand english?
'requires little knowledge' = 'requires not much knowledge'
If I had put 'requires a little knowledge' it would be different.
