Default Live CD over Windows?

I don't know a whole lot about Linux, but I am looking to learn. Is there a such thing as a Live CD that will run over Windows without having to partition my harddrive?

Thanks,
~Greg

Yes, but I don't suggest it. DSL will run inside Windows using something called Qemu:

But if you really want a feel for Linux, get a true Live CD that will run entirely off itself, like Knoppix.

I think he meant a regular Live CD. Any Live CD won't require you to partition, you can just boot off the CD and load Linux from the CD.

I'd recommend trying Knoppix.

If you're looking to really learn, however, I'd say actually install a distribution, and USE it as your main operating system.

Ubuntu is an awesome LiveCD and so **** easy. I just tried it a few days ago and it was so **** simple. Then after I got a good feel for it, I installed it over an old Win ME machine and it practically installed itself! I recommend Ubuntu.

I don't entirely understand your question. Are you asking how to use a LiveCD? All you have to do is make sure your boot sequence is set where your CD drive will boot before anything else.

Yeah, Im not asking how to use a Live CD, I am asking which one i should get.

I am planning on putting Linux on the next computer I get, and I was asking this so I could learn a little in advance.

So if I boot Linux from a CD on a windows machine, and then I restart and take it out, my computer will be the same as before I used it, correct?

Greg,

Ubuntu Live 5.04 is So Awesome, you can go online with it, It has Games, A command line. It's fantastic. Linux at it's best. Simple fast with none of the mess.

Slackware is A great OS for the in depth linux stuff. Command line and all but this is "old school" Linux. It isn't hardcore linux but it is challenging

if you want a livecd (or any thing for that matter) to run while windows is running, you can try vmware, they have free trial for 30 days, they don't require your to partition your hard drive, but they will require you make a rather large file (about 5 gig if you want to run linux smoothly), so get a ntfs partition (fat32 only supports file size upto 2 gig)..

but yah, any live cd will run fine on your computer

I tried the Ubuntu, but it wouldn't boot on my laptop. I set the bios to boot CD-ROM first, put in the disc, restarted, and I could hear the drive spinning it but then it just booted Windows. Anyone have suggestions on what to do?

What burning program are you using? Nero Burning ROM is A pain in the ....

Here is how to burn your CD so you can run it

1 - download the iso - the file name should end with a ".iso" extension
2 - open up Nero or other favourite CD burning app
3 - select - burn image to CD
4 - select the iso file, and click write

Is this the process youv'e followed?

Sometimes the .iso is faulty,

Try deleating it and Re-downloadong it again.

OR

Try burning the .iso image from another machine (don't laugh it works)

OR

I'll send you A copy Just send me your Post Adresss via E-mail and i'll send you a copy.

Hope this helps,
