There must be something unique about your system that you're not telling us.

What type of hard drives are these?
Are you using a separate drive controller?
Do you have some type of on-board RAID enabled or installed?

The laptop is a Toshiba Tecra M2-S530 and the specs are here:

That's a pretty old laptop. I can't imagine trying to run Vista on it.

Regardless, the errors you're seeing just don't make sense with that hardware. I'd suspect a more significant system failure.
