I have Linux Fedora Core 2 dual booting with windows XP on my harddrive. When I change from my Linux partition, and restart my computer, my XP os goes through the usuall boot up, but when it gets to the point where it is ready to load my desktop, I get a black screen. I have to reboot in safe mode, and run a Disk Check to be able to boot my machine under XP normally. This happens every time I run Linux and switch back to XP. Does anyone know a reason why?

it is not easy, (from what i have exprienced) to install linux then install windows and have them both working from a dual boot. i think the only possible way of doing it would be to load grub or lilo onto the linux drive, then it may detect windows if you install it, but im not sure because i havent tried it before.

maybe your windows install is somehow damaged, it could have happened somehow because of linux but it is very unlikely, it could have some problem totally unrelated to linux, so do a backup and format them install windows. that may mean you have to reinstall linux as well, but if it fixes the problem, why not.

I heard that reinstalling grub will do the trick but I to do not have experience with that.

The thing is when you install linux on the same partition some files leak over into the windows partition and it can cause problems. It is not supposed to do this but it does happen from time to time. That is why i always have my linux booting off a seperate hard drive. The guy asked if you installed linux first, when working with windows it is essential to always install it first as it likes to act like it is the big boss. Otherwise it will choke quite often.

i think there are inconsistancies in the boot head in area of the drive. I guess it all depends on your linux installation. If you choose to install the bootloader in a head in area of the drive, then it might not be a problem to install windows afterwards, but if you install the bootloader in the beginning of the linux partition, then your linux might be unbootable.. correct me if im wrong. im still a linovice.

I installed linux fedora core 2 last. Thanks for the 411 on the linux file leakage. If anyone knows how to deal with the problem, I 'd apreciate the insight. Thanks to everyone who's posted so far.

Okay here's the thing: I decided to reboot my machine, and when I got to the part when I get the balck screen, I decided to wait and see what happens. So after about 30 seconds of waiting, XP loaded like normal. Strange huh?

How do you manage to install it on the same partition. that is a bad thing even with windows. If you install linux you will want at least two partitions to itself: / (root) and swap. I like to add a partition for the /boot directory.
