Default linux and sound

i use mandrake linux 10 and my sound is screwed up. I use realtek ac97 sound and when i use XMMS i can get my mp3's to play, but only extremely quietly. I have to have my speaker volume turned up full and the system volume full just to hear it.

if you have any suggestions please feel free to help but i am new to linux so i am still a bit slow

i know people started removing mp3 functions with xmms on newer distros due to license restrictions. have you updated this file recently? you could also try the mandrake control center and re-update your sound card, maybe it somehow changed itself..

run rexima, aumix, or any other mixer, even try alsamixer if thats what its setup for and check the master volume or mute switches.
