| Linux shall reign almighty of all coolness... As we all know, Microsoft's attempts at anti-piracy have become scrupulous. I have had many different accounts, where hardcore windows based nerds, and repair technicians have gotten sick of activation bypassing. They have switched to full out linux (where they used linux before, but used windows with it). This is a huge step for the open source community! Thanks microsoft, for your attempts to force yourselves into peoples computing lives, just to run an OS. If they keep trying this, It will increase the open source community greatly! Before you know it, everyone will be on linux platforms, companies will only write open source software, and microsoft will only be on corporate servers, haha lets all laugh at Bill Gates

| Unfortunatly until Linux starts supporting more games, there will always be a place for Windows in my book. And I doubt that will happen until more developers get away from dx which is a shame.

| The strange thing is that the biggest games in the market right now (eg, Doom and UT) can be played on Linux boxes. |

| Its not strange, it's that larger, older corporations have had time and money spent on programmers that know both OpenGL and DX standards inside and out. Most startup companies (ie Bioware) are from a generation where DX dominates the windows platform, where as ID is from (before) when OpenGL had a larger foothold and DX was shaky at best.

| Linux. Linux is certainly gaining ground. Seems like nearly all the small to mid-sized shops are running it on the backend these days. The big cos are still running IBM, Sun or Microsoft. Time will tell if that changes.
There's no doubt Linux is going to play a major roll in IT for the next 10, 20 or 30 years. Will it unseat MS? Hard to say, but I wouldn't bet on it. The guys in Redmond always come out on top. |

| Five dollars says this site is hosted on Apache running on a linux box (I didn't check either).
About 80% of the sites out there use Linux as a host, because it doesn't die as often as Windows. (GG again, M$!) |

| microsoft is the #1 corporation in the world. I doubt thats going to change in our lifetimes. It will find some way to overcome any threat to its OS. Unless people change their preferences entirely, or windows jumps in price ridiculously, windows will still reign.
Go linux!

| I know that I can't really prove anything one way or the other, but I think Linux will emerge as the top operating system. It already seems to be the top one for people who know what their doing. The problem is, if you don't know what your doing, you're never going to make it in the Linux world. Its not that hard to learn, I'm only 14 and I've been using it for about two weeks, and I'm not exactly the best at it, but I can get arround in it. |

| Well you'll probably have used Windows at some point, and you'll know that it's much easier to use for newbies than Linux. People are willing to pay the price for an operating system they know they can use. Also, Microsoft have all the marketing, so almost everyone's heard of Windows even if they don't use a computer, but not so many will have heard of Linux.
Linux was also designed for server usage more than for desktops, so it's doing its job alright.
I think Linux needs to become more user friendly if it's going to appeal to more people, but I don't see any major problem with it not being the top operating system anyway. At least it makes it less of a target for viruses. |
