Default Linux as a Server

I have never used Linux before, but would like to try it out, as a small server. So I can dial (or use VPN which depending on my location) in from any where and get files, ie connect using a web page, ftp, or similar

The PC is one I just had sitting around, doing sweet nothing.
AMD KII-350MHz 192 Mb Memory, 4 Gb Hard drive.

I have tried search for a suitable version at http://distrowatch.com/

Most versions I have tried seam to work quite good on it, but I can't seem to find a nice small fast version that can be a server, I don't need all the extra programs that you normally get. Just need simple stuff and a GUI would be very nice.

Thanks for any links

Sure, if ya set it up as a an FTP server and a web server, you can get to it from anywhere.

If you want to use it as a server, I suggest Slackware or Debian.

CentOS is also pretty good and can run on low end hardware. CentOS is basically RHE with all the rubbish cropped out. Hook it up with an installation of pureftpd and apache, add them to a cron, then you're in business.

I'd recommend Fedora Core 4 for beinginers it has some nice Server features and a GUI install very nice for the beginers.

LOL Gray; http://debain.org is the home of Samuel Abels.

http://debian.org----I will worn you it may be daunting if you have never used any type of *nix.

I like Slackware since it basically forces you to learn the nuts and bolts of Linux. Sure, Fedora or the others will give you a GUI, but you really ought to know how to do it manually.

Besides, all I've even got hooked up to my Linux box is power and ethernet, lol. If it can't be done in a SSH box, then I can't do it. (No x-windows for me)
