Default Linux router with traffic shaping?

Hi all,

I'm about to buy a small system to make it a linux router with source and destination based traffic shaping. I'm not so sure about the Linux distribution and packets/scripts to use.

Is anybody here using a linux comp as a traffic shaping router? What does your configuration look like?

what do you mean by traffic shaping?

network address translation, masquerading, and tunneling are part of the linux kernel

well, I want the linux router to perform better under heavy load than my current hardware router does. What's probably needed is some kind of Traffic Shaping / QoS solution. I couldn't find any packets or scripts realizing this, but what I aim for is port-based and IP-based traffic shaping to ensure good ping for applications which need them (voice over IP etc.), even when the line is crowded.

aaaaaaaaaah, ok well that first link has 2 links in near the bottom with pretty decent guides to get you started, wont be "turn key" scripts though, you will have to come up with some of your own

You wont need a complicated distro, almost anything will do, I like slackware myself. You will need all the networking tools. You will also need to learn how to use iptables and a few other things.I didnt read thru all of it but youve got me curious now, Id like to know how they throttle the packet flow, I know it can be done, but never seen how myself.
