Default Linux on a Power Mac

I dug my old Power Mac G4 (Digital Audio) out of the closet and am trying to install Linux on it.

I tried two different distributions, Unbuntu and Mandriva. I boot off the CD but when it tries to detect the video card I get an error about not being able to detect the video BIOS, and then it just hangs.

The Power Mac has the original video card in it, an ATI Rage 128 Pro connected to an Apple Studio Display (crt model) via an ADC connector.

Has anyone else installed Linux on a Mac successfully?

Gee, that sounds like my Mac...

Debian works brilliantly with my PowerMac G4 (and even better once I recompiled with a Multi Proc kernel) with the original ATI Rage 128 Pro and my 17" Apple Studio Display.

When you apt-get install the X family, make sure to change the default init on boot to 3.
