Default Linux + Microsoft Intellimouse explorer = not working

yep... exactly what the title says... I installed linux yesterday... during the installation, my mouse was not working... I tabbed my way to configure my mouse to be Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer and it worked! But... when I boot up linux after install, it never worked again. I tried 1) rebooting 2) unplugging and plugging my mouse back in while in linux.

I'm so lost why it's not working... anyone got any ideas?

is it a usb mouse? If not check to see if gpm is running, use ps x as root in a terminal, should see a line showing the gpm program running with options

if it is a usb mouse check to see if the usb modules are loaded with lsusb while logged in as root in a terminal, if they are you should see one being used by the mouse

also need to check /etc/X11/xorg.conf or xf86.conf and make sure the mouse device or pointing device lines are correct and uncommented

need more info to be of any more help

You will need to check as horndude stated in your xorg.conf, what the device ise. Make sure it is the correct device. You will need to change it , it should be something like /dev/.../mice or /dev/tty0/mice you get the point.

but if I can't even access shell, how can I check this stuff? when I go into Linux all I can do is 1) ctrl + alt + del (shut down), Ctrl + esc (task manager)... I can't get anywhere without a mouse... what can I do to get to the shell or even gain access as root?

(Ps: I use susie 9.3)

The USB Module on startup was loaded (I saw it on the boot up process)

try ctrl-alt-F2 or F3 and see if it gives you a console outside of X, use alt F7 to get back

or try to tab your way into a start menu and find a console like xterm or something

Ctrl - Alt-F2 and F3 both worked for me...
however, when I got outside, it prompted for my login and password.

I tried entering Root and the password I've set in the beginning and the user / password for my account... none of them worked. What should I do?

sorry I'm asking such dumb questions, but this is my first time working with linux... I'm pretty much a noob.

have no clue what you have to hit to get out of kdm, but I know certain keypresses in most GUI's plus the tab key will let you navigate w/o a mouse

oh wait a minute, try ctrl-alt-backspace or alt-backspace one of those should kill X

use startx to restart in again

use su, which will prompt for a passwd, enter that(it wont show when typed), this will make you root, then you can maybe try to figure out whats wrong-----w/o any command line skills your probably better off finding your way into Yast while in the GUI though

I don't get what you mean by StartX

When I did ctrl + alt + backspace, it booted me back to the login screen. I logged as my account and I got confused =S

ok, I finally logged in as root from boot up menu after doing ctrl + alt + backspace. However, when I tried to go out of kde (ctrl+alt + f3), same type of problem came up.

I was warned a few times this morning when I boot up my computer about my mouse being detected as new hardware. I tabbed my way through and entered the password, but the screen disappeared and nothing happened after. =/
