Re: Linux Losing to Windows For saying DX10 is better than OpenGL, I give you a few questions:
1.) I have a year-old Radeon card. It shouldn't be considered "obsolete" but DX10 only runs on what? GeForce 8800GTX or Radeon HD. How can you consider that "good" when a year-old card can't perform well with the new software.
2.) If OpenGL is so bad, why can I run a 3d game in Wine, on top of Compiz, and still have the Euphoria screensaver all run on top of each other, and not lag? How can I do this all on an nVidia GeForce4 MX420 with only 64MB of RAM?
3.) If DX10 is so great, why is there no fancy 3d effects in Vista? Sure, Aero took most people by surprise, but when you put it next to Compiz Fusion, it is nothing special. If DX10 is better than OpenGL, it'd make sense that DX10 based desktop effects would be a lot better than OpenGL based desktop effects.
The only reason I can see that companies stick with DX10 and Micro$oft is a history of providing for Micro$oft and the userbase. If game companies made some Linux-only games that people liked, people would be forced to install Linux on their machines. This would increase the Linux userbase.
The only issue I can see is either parents who have no clue what an OS is and don't want their kids messing up their business and email PC with a "foreign object" or users that don't know themselves what Linux is or how to use it.
