Default Linux Live cd

Well I just got my Ubuntu Live cd up and running in vmware, not that it was very difficult, but it seems to be going good so far. Was not sure how this live cd thing would work out but it seems to be going good so far. What are the advantages/disadvantages to the live cd rather than an actual install? I am new to linux so we will see how this works out. Also if i were to install it on my actual hard drive, would i have to uninstall windows if i wanted a dual boot, or could i install this version of linux after windows?

Also if you want this software you can get it for free, as many copies as you want, with free shipping, at shipit.ubuntu.com

why are you running a Live cd in VMware? just boot with the cd in the drive...

the disadvantage to a live cd is you can't really save anything you change. it's slower than an actual install.

you don't have to uninstall windows to install linux for a dual boot, you just need a seperate partition for it. use something like Partition Magic to repartition your drive

I am running the live version in vmware because i already had my windows os running and i did not want to restart because i was still working on some things. I was just pretty much exploring the whole live cd thing as well as linux.

You can't install Windows after you install Linux. Windows deletes everything on the hard drive so it will delete your Linux OS.

Actually, it can be done, but unless you know exactly how to trick the Windows installer and are a God of GRUB, I would NOT suggest it AT ALL.

Bezimm86,

In Answer to your First Question the Advantage of using A live CD rather than a full install is that you can use Linux without messing with your HDD, and if you muck somthing up all you do is restart the machine.... no damage done

The disadvantage is that it is slow, verrry slow (depepending on the distro) and you really have trouble saving work you have done on Live CD, Although it can be done.

it's not the problem of it deleting everything on your harddrive, that's easy to avoid.. it's the problem that windows will overwrite the MBR and you won't be able to choose what OS to boot... like macdude said, you'd have to be the god of grub
