Default linux for laptop

i have an acer laptop.... i tend to use linux for my self study. but i've heard that no laptop is compatible with linux / unix. is that true.... i only have a laptop, no PC....so what should i do?

besides, can i put the software in linux as it is in windows? for example the winamp, adobe photoshop, mcAfee... etc...?? because i've never touch linux before, but i know it'll be useful for me to get know of it....., so please give me suggestion... thnx...

That is the dumbest thing i have heard, i am using linux on a laptop rigth now. There is plenty of software out there that is similar or the same as what runs of windows. For beginners i would recommend mandriva.

what brand and type you are using now?

so you mean any other program can run WELL in linux, right?

yeah i'm dumb.... see my posts number is only 2... u should've known from that.... hahahaha jokin' man....

please tell me more how to start using linux.... i haven't heard about mandriva... wasn't is better red hat or suse?

but now i wanna be able to choose which OS i'm gonna use. either linux or win xp.... i know it possible, but what is the best program to make a partition for my hard drive.....

You can partition your hard drive using a program called PartitionMagic. You will need an ext2 partition, and a swapspace partition, about twice the size of your RAM. PartitionMagic will make everything for you if you tell it you want to install Linux.

Red Hat is better than SuSE in my opinion, but you might want to consider Mandrake (now Mandriva), which I prefer to those two. It's quite user friendly, and a good way to get started.

If you don't mind a steeper learning curve, I reccomend Slackware over all those distributions.

I reccomend Ubuntu for any linux user, it's a very simplistic OS with minimal clutter, allows you direct access to the root terminal and works quite well on older machines.

May I reccomend Downloading the live .iso before downloading the full install .iso
