Question Linux Hard drive compatibility

I personally built my own computer and my computer has the latest hardware (PCI Express Bus and SATA). My Hard drives and my Plextor DVD drive are both SATA. Will Linux recognize SATA? I only ask because i am trying to run SimpleMepis LiveCD and it won't recognize my filesystem. My only thought is it can't recognize my hard drive.....Please Help....

erm.. your filesystem? as i don't think mepis relys at all on hard drives.. though i have never tried it without one, but i've tried knoppix without harddrive and it works fine.. and i don't see why it wouldn't support SATA either.. try some other live cd?

It needs to have the 2.6 kernel to recognize the drive. It is the only kernel family that recognizes SATA devices.

EDIT: I know that most relatively new releases of Knoppix have the option to use the 2.6 kernel, so you might try that...

Default Thanks

I have SimpleMepis version 3.3.1 and don't know what kernal this is???
Obviously, its not kernal 2.6. Do you know when they plan of updated SimpleMepis to Kernal 2.6? I really want to install SimpleMepis. I do have Ubuntu. Will this work on a SATA drive??? My version is 5.04???

I tried using kernal 2.6, but it still won't recognize my SATA hard drive. I have a seagate. So i guess i will dual booting with Ubuntu. If you have any advise how i could fix this. Please let me now.

Does it not recognize the drive, or the file system? Have you considered trying Knoppix?

**** Small Linux is the best. DSL Linux uses Knoppix but it has some modifications to it.

But DSL does not standardly use the 2.6 kernel, does it?

all distro's with the 2.6 kernel immediatly recognized my sata drives. some distro's (still) by default install the 2.4 kernel, so you need to specify to them which kernel to install. in debian, for instance, you need to type linux26 at the command prompt when the pc first boots off the cd.
