Default Linux File Server

I want to put up a file server in my basement.

The computer I am trying to put Linux on:

700 mhz AMD duron
320 mb RAM
250 gig HD
Windows XP

Currently, It's a Windows file server, and I want to put Linux on it. I want to put it in the basement as file server. First of all, I'd like to ask for suggestions as to which version of linux I should used. Second of all, I'd like to ask what are the basics to putting up a linux file server.

Thanks in advance.

And distro will do. Since you are asking, you may want to go with one of the more friendly offerings (Mandrake/Mandriva, SuSE, ...) or a RedHat Enterprise clone.

Samba is about all you will need and should be available as part of the install procedure.

You should probably know that Samba on SuSE is like trying to teach my dog a new trick....

...especially since I don't have one

You must be talking about an old version of SuSE - im running 9.2 and i dont think it could have been easier to set up. It is a case of choosing the directory that you want to share and selecting the users you want to have access to it - nice and easy.

I did the same thing with a Cel 800, 512mb Ram. I installed Ubuntu Hoary and then put on Samba. Works very well.
