Default Linux- BIGTIME Newbie

K guys, I know this has probably been aksed a million itmes in a million different languages, but, what is the easiest to setup, while still very stable, distro? I need one that either is very easy to understand on the site, or has very good manuals for downloading and installation. Lately, I've had folks point me to psecific websites for a distro, and then say "Download it." Ok.... Do you have any idea how many freakin' downloads there are??? Anyways, if ya'll could give me some good, easy to follow suggestions, I'd be much obliged. Here's what I'm running and my needs/wants:

P2 400Mhz, 256mb RAM, 30 Gb HDD, CD-RW, and all the other little niceties.
I am currently running Win98, but I want to reformat soon, so I thought it'd be a good time to install Linux at the same time.
What I'm really looking for is a good stable enviroment in which I can mess around in and get to know Linux more.

Thanks.

Mandrake is good for n00bs. It was a bit slow on my comp though. (400MHz)

Why don't you check out this thread. People posted the pro's and con's of quite a few different distro's.
