Linux is a free operating system, and it has many advantages of windows xp, but it also has some disadvantages. Virtually everything for linux is free, including linux itself. You can install linux onto a computer withought overwriting windows, if you want to try it. You can just download it and burn it to a CD. You may want to try Ubuntu, its good for beginners and it also satisfies the intermediate users. I like it, some hate it, it's up to you.

go there, click on distributions and look some of them over

linux is linux is linux really, they all use the same GPL software, only thing that changes is what package management they use if at all, what binaries it comes bundled with, and whether or not it uses sysV or bsd style init scripts

no such thing as a "best" linux, any of them can be changed into the other for the most part with some work........it isnt windows, you cant apply windows ideas to linux, doesnt work like that

Not to mention ease of use, for someone as new as yourself you might want to start of with something that has a graphical installation system, easy to manage package system (although this can be very buggy) and something that you can easily setup your hardware with (again, this can be very buggy).

All in all, everyone suggests Mandriva 10 for new users. I have had terrible luck with it myself, but I have had bad luck with just about any distribution.

check your hardware ahead of time too, linux does not support nearly as diverse of hardware as windows nor do many parts makers cater to linux---check for compatibilty BEFORE installing linux, not after, it will save you some headaches

nvidia does, ati does not for the most part
cutting edge brand new stuff often doesnt work for a few months to a year till someone reverse engineers drivers in many cases

some things actually work better, linux usually doesnt limit hardware functions like windows often does---like TV cards for example, they usually work better with linux if supported than they do in windows
