you'll need something like partition magic to partition the drive as that can do it with out wiping the data

There's really only a few distros of Linux that have to be paid for. People will usually not recommend those distros for one reason or another.

Take a look at the Linux Distribution Recommendation Thread stickied at the top of the page.

Like skuzzle said, you'll need to repartition your hard drive. Make sure that you run disk defragmenter on it first.

Another option would be to buy and install a second hard drive into your system. That's how I have mine setup. One harddrive for Windows, one for Linux.

For the LOVE OF GOD don't try Knoppix first off, You sound like your just begining your journey toward computing Enlightinmement. Try Ubuntu Live, it is Very simplistic, not at all cluttered and it is easy to use, This sounds like what your looking for

If your looking for somthing A little more advanced try Slackware, it's still quite simplistic, in terms of the layout but it poses a challenge for anyone interested in Linux.

if your looking for somthing A little different Try SUSE. However this is Very Windowsesk It's like windows with Linux Command line. I've said it b4 and I'll say it again if your going to use Linux use Linux, if you want windows use windows

If you want To TRY somthing KNOPPIX like try Simply Memphis, is less cluttered than KNOPPIX and easier to use

PS. I'm not saying "DON'T" try Knoppix, just don't try it while your starting out, it's very clutered and can be confusing at times as a consiquence (ie. Quite difficult to Navigate Around)

Hope this Helps,

Jake

Live Linux CD's

Once the ISO is downloaded you will have to burn the image to disc. Note - this does not mean to make a data CD as that will be useless. Refer to your CD burning software regarding ISO's.

Knoppix, Mepis, Ubuntu, Slax and Mandrake Move are all good Live Cd's to try. The great thing about Live CD's is they are so much more useful then just trying Linux for the first time. The more you read and learn about them the more you will see the many uses Live CD's offer.

When your ready to download and install a full working Linux distro, you can do so here. (Also, some Live CD's offer the option to install them to your hardrive.)
