Default Ldap?

So i've played with Active Directory for about a year, and i like it, but i'd like a wider knowledge base for myself. I've gotten to know a lot about OS deployment using RIS and active directory and its fun, i dont think i could ever go back to using just a plain P2P network at home.

Basically what I'd like to do, is setup the same type of network..but with linux, possibly a mixed host environment...linux servers and windows and linux clients. I suppose i'd need an ldap logon client for windows, anyone know of anything good?

I'd prefer to use red hat 9, fedora core 5 or fedora core 6 because those are readily available..

what i'd like to accomplish:

central management of user accounts, profiles, home directories
network OS installation

anyone who can provide help would be really appreciated.

thanks in advance and Merry Christmas.
