i built a new computer about 2.5 months ago and am very happy with it, but i am having xp issues. i had an old copy of knoppix (v3) lying around from when my old computer suffered its total existance failure. so i stuck it in the drive and booted up, but i dont think that version recognized sata, as my hard drive was no where to be found. so i downloaded knoppix 5 and put it on a dvd, but it wont finish booting. it does the device recognition and initialitation bit, when it comes time to load the gui i get a screwwy picture that does not get resolved. knoppix 3 booted fine, whats going on? is it a digital video output thing? knoppix is pretty hands off (i think, not too much experiance with linux), is there anything i can do?

1. try burning it again at a slower speed
2. do you have an nvidia card? make sure its not using the NV drivers because it doesnt support most new cards, yet sometimes distros set it to NV by default for nvidia cards.
3. the sata drives should work fine, you might need to mount it. this can be done by doing this in the console

cat /proc/partitions

figure out by size which is the drive, most likely /dev/sda1 so if it is, then do this

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

then the drive will be mounted to /mnt

did you try reburning it at a slower speed?

try just using the old one and mounitng the drive that way

It sounds like a xorg.conf configuration problem. It problably does not have the correct horizontal and vertical frequencys set. It could be a corrupt xorg too as the general stated.

it is booting with an hf of 76.5Hz and a vf of 72.0Hz. is there anyway to specify at startup what frequencies to use?

ok, since the title of this is knoppix not booting (that caught my eye in the first place) I've tried booting knoppix 3.1, 3.4, and 3.9 on a celeron 466 (for playing with) and it won't boot, it kicks me to an extremely limited terminal shell. Any ideas??
