what are you trying to install? installing a lot of things can be fairly painless using *.deb packages. it only becomes a difficulty when the package has "dependencies" on a lot of other packages. in that case all the other packages would have to be located and installed manually, whereas with apt-get (or synaptic or even aptitude) and an internet connection the process could be automated.

Thanks for the expo, but a .Deb file from packages.ubuntu.com when opened gave an error about dependencies. Can you please explain what dependency entails, and how to avoid this problem?

a dependency is something else a program requires to run. sometimes it may rely on other programs to perform certain tasks or require certain libraries to be installed. if you're installing without an internet connection you could track down all the dependencies and i think by putting them in the package cache (/var/cache/apt/archives if i remember correctly) and using synaptic or apt-get to install the package you want. it should recognise that it already has the packages downloaded and then proceed as it would normally with an internet connection.

why can't you use an internet connection to install?

Thanks a mill for the expo.Though i might be able to get a connection to the net, but, its very slow-10KB/s.Also when in windows, i had a bad habit of formattin and reinstalling windows about every 3months.Does it also mean i cant do that in ubuntu, because of my installed apps?I guess there's a way to back up ur downloaded apps and their dependencies so as not to be re downloading apps and their dependencies. Thanks for the reply.

Actually, it was said in ubuntu forums that if i had no internet, i should forget ubuntu.I hope its not true.

i see no reason why you should forget about Ubuntu just because you don't have an internet connection. there is no reason you should re-install Ubuntu. i've had my current install of Ubuntu running along side XP on my desktop for 11 months. in that time i've re-installed XP maybe two or three times.
