Re: installing ubuntu on a laptop. You are asking much, if you already have Windows installed, then you may be in trouble. The question is, did you leave any free space when Windows was installed? If this was a factory-installation, then likely, no. I JUST REMEMBERED AFTER WRITING THIS::::: You can't do this, if you still have the acer warranty, get your money back please. The issue is, if you buy it from the store, I know they don't give you a Windows setup CD, they keep it. You must ask Acer within 90 days of buying it for a CD or you have to pay something like $30. The warranty lasts for, a year I believe. Get your money back if you're smart. This is where I stop, an incomplete reference.
If this is so, then you must backup all important information onto more of your DVDs and prepare to destroy your copy of Windows.
Next, you will have to go into the BIOS/CMOS and change a setting. It is probably set to not boot from a CD/DVD. You must figure out how to enable this setting, allowing it to boot from a DVD/CD.
There also MAY (and likely is) be an option to prevent MBR (Master Boot Record) viruses, you must allow your computer to change the MBR. This option is often called something in relation to a virus. Whatever it is, find it. You will not learn anything if you can not learn to find it yourself.
You must now install Windows first, as installing Windows second often wipes out the MBR data of Linux (making it unbootable) for some reason. Select a hard drive (if you have two). Install Windows using 50% of the partition only if you have one hard drive, if you have 2, then use 100%. If you have Vista, use the recommended partitioning (I am unsure if it is still NTFS). If you are using XP, install it as NTFS partitioning the long way (might as well get rid of the illegal software you may or may not have knowingly downloaded in the past). Remember again to use 50% of the partition. There is a question, how much of the hard drive do you wish to use? 50%, be sure to enter 50% unless you have a massive hard-drive.
Linux is fat and filled to the brim with hearty cholesterol, you will likely have the desire to install many things, yay this is fun, yay I play with Linux yes. I had my fun experiences with BSD in the same way.
So now that your Windows installation is completed, pop in the Ubuntu Linux CD. From this you must boot your computer and wait for a nice graphical setup of sorts to display. When you begin your installation it will ask you which hard drive and partition you wish to use |
