i still feel so stupid
i really like the speed of Xfce, but nothing seems to work. I keep getting an application unknown error when i try to bring up firefox or xmms

are the selections in the menu pointed to the right places?

well even when i open firefox through the terminal it tells me that it couldn't resolve the host. i checked the ethernet card set up and it's active and what not.

add dns numbers for your isp to /etc/resolv.conf

i'm not sure what to add into the resolv.conf, it's blank for all i see

I bet if you checked it now after that reconfigure it will have some #'s in it now
probably something like this:
nameserver aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd
most linux configure files are plain uncoded text
