What exactly do you want to do? Prettymuch any of them can be setup to do prettymuch anything if you know what your doing, and will run on a very wide variety of architectures from cell phones and ipods all the way to mainframes. Your question as is, is like asking which is better, apples or oranges?

Linux can run on as little as 4-8mb of RAM with no hard drive all the way up to a kitchen sink install with more than 3GB of software.

Without getting into alot of details, 700mb will be pretty tight if you want X unless your willing to be very very picky about what you want for software.

well, you will have to use ndiswrapper which makes use of native windows drivers and allows them to be used under linux, not as good as natve linux drivers but it will work

go here:

http://www.linux.org

click on distributions and start searching, d_amn small linux, puppy linux, vector linux will probably fit

700mb is pretty small while still having X, which is one of your requirements

I dont know any other way to put this, but linux is NOT windows, whatever ideas or preconceptions you have of linux, your in for a shock. You cant apply many ideas or things your used to with windows to linux, doesnt work that way. I dont think AIM works with linux, but other messaging wares do as far as I know that do work on the AIM network/protocol.

Just for comaprison, windows XP comes in at around 2GB, 700mb is gonna be rough, you will be giving up alot more than likely.

check out the websites for d_amn small linux, puppy, and vector and see what you can find out

Puppy Linux and DSL are **** good options for what you want

Puppy Linux

http://www.goosee.com/puppy/download/downpage.htm

**** small Linux

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html

Vector Linux

http://www.vectorlinux.com/mod.php?m...u=12&page_id=4

if I may I'd just like to add my 2c. Horndude is Like yoda, he is very wise (except he doesn't talk backward, and he is not that old) Linux is Not windows, you WILL find it rough to begin with, Linux is not so much Point n click OS you have to Make things work.

But you will find Working with Linux a worthwhile experence

they all use the same software

a linux distro is nothing more than a collection of GPL software combined with the linux kernel to form an OS, underneath, they are all the same

all of them with the exception of gentoo install a collection of precompiled binaries just like windows does

the only thing that changes is what package management system they use if they use one at all, which style of init scripts they use(sysV or bsd style), and how much extra GUI apps they add for system configuration

in other words, the apps will run the same no matter which one you pick, only way to make it go faster is start optimizing the code, removing services, and compiling as much as possible for the architecture used

they are all pretty darn stable

look thru your choices and find the one that has as many of the apps that you plan on using but will still fit in 700mb and give it a try
