Question How do I save or install changes to knoppix HD install

My installation of Knoppix on a HD seems to be read only, as I cannot change files in graphics mode. How do I change to root in graphics mode? I put my standard login into the sudoers group, but it is not honored.
I started by wanting to chage the configuration in free86 for my video card (nv-fx5500). I tried in terminal mode under root, but the interface is very terce.
Next I tried in KDE graphic mode to run XF86Config-4. Better. I picked my video card, but now I can't save it. Nor can I seem to run this as root in grahics mode. Is this because of my ignorance or is there a read only lock on the drive (if so how do I unlock it) or howdo I log to root in KDE or Gnome?
Please help as I came to drain the swamp, but now I am up to it in Alligators

i thought you can sudo into root.. As you need root to install it on the hd in the first place?? (my memory might be bad, as it's been a long time since i've actually done it.)
