I can dl the source code... thats about it. I've never done this before. Ive seen fuides on upgrading a kernel. How do I make a partition for it?

try the following link for a pretty reasonable guide to rebuilding a 2.4.x or 2.6.x kernel.

One point to add, remeber to run lilo, if you are using it, after you have built and installed the kernel or it will not load when you rebot the machine.
