how to check a server

suppose i have simple server program which is listening on a particular port. how do i determine if that server is listening on that port? all this system is running in linux environment. so preferably i need a terminal command...
i can use nmap but i think there would be a much easier way to do it...

ping will not tell me what port my server is listening on...
i need to determine on what port my server is listening...
