Default hibernate in linux?

For the users of windows xp the hibernate option is a helpful tool. so i was just wondering if a similar option was available in linux (kde or gnome). before logging off it offers me an option as "save current setup", is it the same as hibernate? if so the shutdown time remains same in linux while in xp my machine shutsdown faster! as always any help is greatly appreciated. c ya!

i tried the following.
i kept the firefox running and a freecell game running and then tried to log off with "save current setup" option, but it said that firefox is not compatible with this option and had to be restarted. moreover the game also was not running when i logged in again! does anyone have some idea? thanks in advance!!
