Default Help in understanding linux directories

Hi all, im about to get really deep into linux....step by step of course...and i would appreciate your support.

As we have in Microsoft Windows the following directoriies:

Documents and Settings:
user and application files and settings are stored here.

Program Files:
Installed profram files located here

Windows:
System files located here

Would you be kind enough to briefly describe what are located in the following directories:

Some are obvious and easy, but please try and include them all for others to know (who are not that smart to figure it out themselves).

/backup
/bin
/boot
/dev
/etc
/home
/lib
/lost+found
/media
/mnt
/opt
/root
/sbin
/scripts
/proc
/sys
/srv
/selinux
/usr
/var

I currently have a FEDORA CORE

web server
email server

hosted on the internet. Before i start to secure / optimize the system. I need to know whats installed, where its installed, etc.
The listed directories have been taken from there.

I guess /backup is something you see on FC5, I assume it's for backup file but this should be mounted on its on partition anyways.

/media I only see in FC5 and probably SUSE, this is probably where they mount the CD/DVD-ROM.

/lost+found I usually see this in FC5 when running ext2, since it can't do any journaling, this is the directory it keeps file that are restore from a crash or improper shutdown.

Everything else can be found here

/backup MUST be FC because I've never seen it anywhere else before. /media, I've seen in every distro I've ever used, so I don't think it's distro specific. And if /lost+found were only on non-journaled filesystems, then I never would have seen it before, but as is, I've seen it everywhere I go.

/media isnt standard, neither is /backup or /selinux or /srv or /scripts

you have to remember fedora core isnt a "standard" distro, its a testbed for bleeding edge alpha and beta software, and its also prettymuch its own type of distro, it doesnt follow alot of the normal standards
