Default help with ubuntu linux

I am new to Ubuntu can someone post a newbies guide?

Hod do you install things that you download for example Firefox

you dont really need to worry about that. Just open synaptic package manager from system > administration.

You'll find most things in there. Select them and hit apply. It will download and install.

Sounds silly but the concept is fantastic.

but i want firefox 2 not the one that is built into ubuntu lol and i went through that package manger its not there

Mozilla Download

Download that. Open a terminal, type tar zxvf firefox*.gz and hit enter.

As root, copy the folder to somewhere (like /usr/bin), and then create shortcuts.

Bam.

If your Firefox is still 1.5 or whatever, you probably have Ubuntu 6.06. If you upgrade to 6.10 (Edgy Eft) then Firefox will be updated to version 2. If you want to go even higher, you can install the "beta" of 7.04 (Feisty). 7.04 is nice, but if you're looking for stable, I suggest 6.10.

There is a way to upgrade Firefox in 6.06 to 2.x though, I did it when I had 6.06 installed. I just don't remember, just google "Firefox 2, Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake" or something like that.

i did that and nothing happened, am i suppose to save firefox in a certain place?

It's ok i figured it out
ubuntu says there is a list of 20 000 apps you can installi can only find a few hundred any one know where they are?
