just as kudzu is available on red hat linux ; is there any utility on ubuntu 7 (fiesty) which can perform the same tasks? i tried searching but many links just went cold.

What does it do?

kudzu is a hardware probing library

sudo apt-get install lshw lshw-common

Then run lshw and it'll show a good deal about your hardware.

I ran the lshw command and it told me how much ram I have but it didn't say what speed it is. Is there a way to find out without physically opening the case?

try hwinfo command line utility. it also gives you loads of information....c ya
