Default Help pls

I have just put together my first computer, today, and i thought i might want to run linux on it , just to see how it goes. However, when i try to run the ubuntu disc (which im sure hasnt got errors as i did the winMd5sum) i just get 'Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0'. I read up on this, someone had suggested to try the alternate installer. I tried this, and got 'no common cd found' during the detect and mount cd phase. Can someone please help me out with either of these problems?

my build is:
Asus p5q mobo
intel core 2 duo e7200 @ 2.53 ghz
2 gig ram kingston hyper x
250gig Seagate 7200rpm hdd
eah3450 Graphics card
(obviously) have dvd drive installed aswell

Pls help me out

which version of Ubuntu are you trying to use? i'm guessing you are using a SATA dvd drive, i'm wondering if this has something to do with the problem. also i would check out the BIOS setup and if you aren't actually using a floppy drive try disabling the floppy disk controller.

What stages of the install process have you completed. Have you managed to run the live CD or is the error happening before this stage?

Cheers,

Hello,

How did you download Ubuntu? Did you do it thru HTTP or Torrent? It could be that the download from the website was corrupted. I would suggest trying to download it from Torrent so you can use the MD5 SUms to verify that it is a good download.

Cheers,
Mak

I download it from the website, and verified it was correct using md5sum.
Ive just found out that the kernel doesnt support SATA cd drives for installation for some reason... so i guess thats the end of that.

cheers for ur help

Hello,

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on my SATA. Maybe it is because you have ACHI enabled. Check your BIOS and see if it is set to ACHI mode. If so set it to IDe and try to isntall Ubuntu.

Cheers,
Mak
