Both i386. Rule of thumb is use i386 when in doubt UNLESS:
-You know your processor is 64 bit (Core Duo 2, Athlon 64, Sempron 64, etc.)
-You're using a Mac or some other type of computer.

Okay, I'm in another predicament... I need to boot from CD, but for my laptop I can't get to my bios I don't think... I mean I know i've done it before, but when it boots up I just see some compaq sign and then it goes straight to windows loading before I ever see "press this button for bios"

Erm...I don't know about compaq, but in a fair amount of bios's it's the delete key, also try the function keys.

Nope...

Is there a way to start the OS install from Windows..? I don't mind downloading another image or anything, I just really want to get Linux installed...

**** COMPAQ!!!

If all else fails, I guess I can wait for my new computer and install it on there, but I want it early.. =\

You can't install it from inside Windows, the only way is to boot from the disc.

Try the Control key also to get into the BIOS

EDIT: Read this:

The following methods are used to run the BIOS Setup routines on Compaq laptop systems:

*For Presario models, power on the system and press F2 to enter BIOS Setup when the logo screen appears during startup.

*For Evo models, power on the system and press F10 while the "F10 = ROM Based Setup" message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen during startup.

*For Prosignia models, power on the system and press F10 when the blinking cursor appears in the upper-right corner of the display during startup.

Looks like your set here man but...

I'll add my 2c anyway cause I am difficult.

When Choosing a distro this should always be your first stop: http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ (ignore if it says Ubuntu matches that for everything, and as stated earlier it is EVIL!) but there should be other matches there as well try one of those

Beware Knoppix it works well as a Live CD but as an installed system it is difficult to install and use. the *noppix site actually recomends a debian Install.

A few personal recomendations:

Kubuntu
http://www.kubuntu.org/

Uses KDE desktop, one CD install works both as a live and Install CD. Be wary it is a bit bloated.

Mandriva
http://frontal2.mandriva.com/en/downloads/mirrors

This is what PCLinuxOS is based on it is a BIG distrobution with all you will ever need

PCLinuxOS
http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?7

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.

BeatrIX
http://www.watsky.net/download.html

This Distro is small fast and effective, the ultimite Workers CD

Mephis
http://www.mepis.org/

Everything you will ever need on 1 CD. Hardware detection is exelent, as is the feel and look of the distro

hope this adds food for thought,

Jake

HAHAHA, my presario ended up having to use f10 to get to the bios, doesn't make sense...

Alright, going to install now :\
