color.gz is for older slackware installs. the newer system uses a larger rootdisk that needs to be broken up into 2 1.44 meg images, install.1 and install.2. color.gz is still used as a whole, but only in the boot-cd's initial rootdisk (initrd) just write your kernel to one floppy, install.1 to another, install.2 to a 3rd, and make network.dsk and pcmcia.dsk disks as you need them.
