Default Few questions about Linux

So I'm actually a PC Repair guy, I think XP a good OS if you know how to maintain it. But I know it uses alot more hardware resources than I would like it to. I'm thinking about starting to use Linux because I liked the atmosphere of Knoppix alot better. A few reasons being it seems aimed at people who know more about computers, much less viruses, and uses less system resources. So me being a techy geek and real concerned about computer performance and speed (gaming and app use), I'm wondering if Linux would be better? I'm a real Linux newb, mostly because I've been ignorant of it for the passed few years since I've had no reason to learn anything about it really. So what DO people use it for mainly? And would you suggest it to someone like me? Thanks all.

Wizard,

Yes I would reccomend Linux to anyone who wants to learn more about how software/computers work and such, It is true that Linux uses far less in Terms of system recources thus it increases computer performence, as for gaming their are games for Linux though somewhat more limited than that of windows: here is A list of Games for Linux, May I also add to this List postal 2 it is a very good game

Would linux be better, you are asking a rather loaded Question. Most people in a Linux forum will say Linux is best, having said that yes I'd say that yes Linux would be better, but windows has it's advantages as well. Also it depends what you want to do with your system for general things like e-mail, Word processing, online work and such Linux performs wonderfully... you can also use it for programming and a whole host of other functions.

I'd read up on some basic commands and learn how to install a system, Install Software and such ih and lets not forget if you run into issues www.google.com/linux is a great place to start

Beware of Knoppix though as a live cd it works great as an installed system though she is a little tough to learn with very bloated and not easy to learn with. I'd start out with a learning distro like Slackware or debian to get your feet wet. Or if you want a pretty graphical type setup PCLinuxOS works wonders

also some suggested reading:

Books

Linux in a nutshell 4th edition
Linux for dummies 6th edition

i use it for work.. im self employed and have a laptop and desktop.

both run linux.. lappy runs debian.. desktop ubuntu.

I find for work it is a much nicer, more productive environment. Also allows me to have a local web server so i can do my php development and testing all in 1 place.

I do miss some things from windows, though most have other linux methods which ive not found yet
