Default Fedora Project

Hello,

I want to download the OS Fedora Core 4. It says it has different images:

i386, x86_64, and ppc

I can download these from http://fedora.redhat.com/Download/

What one do I download for my machine? I am new to this so I don't know. What does each type mean?

Right now I am running Windows XP Home SP2. I plan to dual boot. My machine specs are:

Intel Pentium 4 1.8 GHz
512 RAM

Thank you in advance for your help!

you computer is x86

so i guess you download the x86_64 images...

if you are new to linux, you should try ubuntu

http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

that's the linux version i use... I tried fedora, but found ubuntu to be a lot easier...

edit:

correct me if I'm wrong...,

... x86 is 32-bit computers... x64 is 64-bit computers....

I'm not sure about i386, although it sounds familiar... and i think ppc is for macintosh...

Intel Pentium 4 1.8 GHz is classed generically as i386.

i386 are the "typical" Pentium and AMD processors that people currently have. You might see it as i86 or x86, or something very similar.

The x86_64 is the 64 bit version. You would want this if you have a 64 bit AMD or Pentium, and want to run Linux in 64 bit.

The ppc is Power PC, if you wanted to install Linux on an Apple. Edit: Let me rephrase this. You use the PPC version if you want to install it on a non-Intel Apple or Mac box.

you may even try a "live cd" version of linux, as you may find a version that you like better before you install without having to keep formatting your machine
