Default Fedora Core 3

i recently installed fefora core 3 on my box because i want to learn linux. but ive been having some problems:

1. when i put an audio cd in my drive it will open KScd then say "drive error". I thought it might be that linux doesnt have my drive installed properly, so i went to /dev/ and "cdrom" wasnt there, is there a logical reason for this? or is it just one of those strange issues. This happens whether im running gnome or KDE, also using a different cd drive doesnt fix the problem either.

2. i tried to setup an internet connection and i found where to do it, then it says there was no modem found, but it is in my computer, so im not sure what to do, would taking it out, booting, then putting it back in a booting fix the problem, because it would recognise it as a new device, or could the problem be that linux wont support my modem.

3. my sound is really fuzzy, ive set the right device, (PCI sound card) but it still is really fuzzy. does anyone know why this might be happening?

its a bit to read through, i know, but i really need help on this one.

i installed fedora 3 x86_64 platform to take advantage of my chip, but half of my hardware had no support. i think cdrom is mounted on /dev/hdc but im not too sure. getting everything working was really a challenge for me. Out of every distro I tried, mandrake fully runs my computer 100%. that is to say I have decent 3d acceleration, 64 bit support, sound, wireless, USB peripherals. only thing not working is the 56k modem, thank god I dont need it.

thanks for the reply, i had tried the /dev/hdc but doesnt work, i think i might go back to ubuntu.... at least that had good support for everything, but one good thing with FC3 was that the install was so customisable, and networking was great.

whats your /etc/fstab file look like?

which line is the cdrom drive on?
ide1-master=/dev/hda
ide1-slave=/dev/hdb
ide2-master=/dev/hdc

etc etc

what kind of cdrom is it?, chances are unless its ancient, its supported

what kind of modem do you have?, if its a winmodem it probably wont work

what kind of sound card do you have?

lastly, fedora core is redhat, redhat has a website, on that website you will find a hardware compatibility listing, and its good for all versions of linux, underneath, linux is linux, they are all based on redhat, slackware, mandrake or debian for the most part, the rest are just modified versions of those, for example ubuntu is debian based, if your gonna change, might as well get one of the originals
