i boot the machine up and it goes thru all the tests, then it asks me for a id and password
i user root and the password...then it takes me to a "command prompt", when i type in startx, it takes me to a black screen with a green border and has the same "command prompt" in it.

I was hoping for some form of GUI

wow what a n00b eh...i have installed linux and dont even know how to get in the OS...oh well...if u dont ask, you dont get eh..

What video card do you have? If the drivers for it were installed correctly during setup, Fedora should default to GUI mode on boot.

That's what "startx" is supposed to do

The only thing I can think of is maybe try reinstalling.. perhaps something went wrong with the install and it didn't tell you.

do this after logging in as root when the computer starts up.
tail -f /var/log/messages
hit ctrl-alt-f6 login again, type startx
then hit ctrl-alt-f7 and look at the log file.
maybe you didn't even install a window manager, alot of people who run servers don't put gui's in good luck man!

yea, server install i think defaults to not install any window managers, so you may just want to do a reinstall, make sure to choose gnome/kde and the xwindow system

it's good to be back around work's kinda mellowed down so i have some more free time good to see you around too
