Default External drive won't read in Windows XP after copying files to it from Knoppix

Hey guys:

I have a Western Digital external hd which I used to backup data from my failed XP hard drive. I then formatted the computer, installed Vista, and now the problem is... I can't access this external hard drive from Windows Vista...

The error is: "E:\ not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable."

What can I do?

Is this a good solution: I was gonna boot up knoppix, put in the hard disk, and copy those files from the external disk to the vista hard disk...

^ if I do that, will I correct that hard disk as well?!?!

I really need the data on my external drive...

Run check disk on the External first. If that doesnt work then run the LiveCD. After you get the data off of it then format it and that will fix it.

Thanks Makaveli, I can't tell you how much help you are giving me

The only concern I have is... how can I mount my hard drive (/dev/sda1) as read AND write mode... and will I be able to safely move my data off the external to the vista hard drive without messing anything up?

As soon as you get the disc mounted it will do what you want no issue. I am not sure how to mount it though. I use Ubuntu and i have moved data from my XP to my Vista partition without a problem.

I have never used Knippox so i dont know what to say.

Hmmm, I'll try it in a few minutes. The only problem I can think of is that I'd have to mount it with ntfsmount instead of mount.

I had to do some tweaking of the mounting parameters with the external drive to even get it to be writable

I don't want to have to do that to my laptop hard disk, and screw things up...
