Dual-Boot problem D

I'm using this "guide" here
;but it still seems to boot ubuntu instead of XP.

XP is installed, and then I used Partition Magic to create a new partition on C: drive (Only drive), then I installed linux on that partition without formating C:\

It says to edit the 'menu.lst' file, which I've done; but I'm not sure if I've done it correctly or not.

I've attached my current menu.lst file in a text document from Ubuntu.
I put the .txt extension on the end in case you can't view it in windows. :|

OH by the way. I've never done this before.

You shouldn't have to edit menu.lst yourself...

What I do is have Windows installed, then boot up my Ubuntu LiveCD. Then I use GParted (a partition editor included with Ubuntu, it's like a free Partition Magic) and resize the Windows partition so that there is some empty space on the disk. Then I just run the Ubuntu installer, picking "Use largest continuous free space" when it asks where to install to. It will automatically detect Windows and add it to the menu.lst file so that you don't have to touch it.

Are you wanting Windows to be your default? If so, it looks like you followed advice for 2 different ways of doing it and because of that, it doesn't work.

One way to do it is to move your section for Windows in menu.lst to before the BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST section. That way, since your default is automatically 0, that will make Windows the first thing to boot with a position of 0 on the list.

Another way to do it is to leave Windows where it is at the end, and to count down starting with 0 to see how many boot options down Windows is. Then change the default to that number.

You did them both. In yours, Windows was 4 down, so you changed your default to 4. Then you moved Windows to the front, which gave it a 0 position. So now an Ubuntu kernel is in the number 4 position and that's what the default is set for.

To fix it, just change your default back to 0, and Windows will be the default boot option.

Hi Sinci. Don't know if your new to Linux systems and dual booting but if you are give the distro, PCLinux 2007 consideration. Its very easy to install a dual boot with this one, be it a second partition or second hard drive. And if you intend experimenting, like some one else mentioned have a copy of G-Parted and also Supergrub Disk. Super grub is really great.
Maybe you know this stuff but just thought i'd let you know. Go The Lions !! Cheers.

Yeah, I'm new to linux + Dual booting.

I haven't had time for like 2 weeks D:

Hi again Sinci. Don't forget Supergrub Disk. A must have if your dual booting etc i reckon. Here is the link:

Also you might want to download ISORecorder, small, straight forward little app solely for burning iso's. I usually burn at 4x600 but have done a few at 8x600 of late and had no probs. Be good mate if you have a second machine to start off with to get the hang of it. Just a couple of months ago deleted the my XP partition by mistake cause i was too tired and in too much of a rush.
