Default Download Linux

Hey

I recently did alot of research and found out [to my opinion] that Linux is the best OS out there. Is it true that it never crashes? I did find a site where you can download it for free. So is it just a virus or it's the actual OS. And what's LiveCD?

before you download anything, please look around, visit the websites from those distro's, it will save you some headaches, many of these distro's have crappy websites, they dont come complete, and their support stinks

while its true that linux is linux is linux, for a newbie it will make things easier if you stick with one of the originals or big 4 as I call them, even a couple of them have bad support from their websites anyway

a good distro will have every piece of software in their distro available individually at their website available for download as well as documentation and where to go for support, if they dont have that, be aware--------->this right there essentially narrows it down to 2 of them, pretty telling info considering there's more than 200 linux distro's

That's right.

I've never crashed Linux without it having been my own catastrophic error (e.g. compiling a kernel but forgetting support for my root filesystem), so I'd say it's pretty stable.

Have a look at the top distributions on distrowatch - they are usually good bets. I suggest a distro such as Mandrake or SuSE, they have busy newsgroups so 'many eyes' will see your problem if you need to ask for help.

About games: I have no problem with Linux and gaming. I hear there are games apart from chess and go, but I bet they're no good.

Give your local library a visit, last time I was in there they had a Red Hat Linux book that came with the installation CD's. You will learn a lot that way, because the transition from Windows to Linux is pretty hard and you will most likely get frustrated.

i also suggest you do a little more research and ask yourself why you want to use Linux because it's not for everyone. read up on it...

and it's not a .... virus.....

Im not going to use it for gaming. I barely play games. All I do is do homework, go on www.nexopia.com, and play games on-line. But there is a lot of word processing. I like Linux over windows because it won't crash. When I type essays and stories, sometimes, the PC will shut down. I have seen it happen on many PCs using Windows. And thanks kostas for confirming that it is not a virus. Thanks for all of the great help!
