Disagree on the resource-hog bit...last time I tried it, I found it to be rather snappy, especially for all the eye-candy visual effects it does. Haven't really analyzed comparitive memory usage and all, but it's really not slow, and it doesn't eat into my SWAP, which means it's good enough on the memory side of things, certainly no worse than KDE.
On the other hand, I don't feel it's totally ready for most regular desktop usage yet. Certainly not for most users, it relies on too much manually editing configuration files to make small appearance and functionality customizations, and considering how many users won't even touch the CLI...
The point is, it's fun to play with for now, has that cool-factor, and I expect a few years in the future it'll mature a lot, gain some quick configuration panels, become more stable (IMPORTANT), and probably see an increase in users. But at the moment I wouldn't do any work in it.
