Troubledyouth

Default difference in some linux iso files

on some of file on linuxiso.org. there are some iso files that are i586 and then there are some that are i386.what are the differences between these and is there a certain one i am suppose to use on my comp or does it matter?

i386 is optimized for AMD processors and i686 is optimized for intel. i586 I am not sure about. CHossing the one that matches your type will give you a performance increase.

i386 is the old x386 series of cpu's
i486 is the x486 cpu's
i586 is pentium 1,2,and 3 series plus amd k6 series
i686 is pentium 4 and athlon/duron/sempron

these numbers refer to architecture of the cpu, distributions these days are often compiled to run on certain architectures, they arent backward compatible, an i386 will run on anything, an i686 wont

oh. I saw some i686 packages and they said only for intel. Sorry for the error.
