I finally managed to successfully install ubuntu on this dell desktop. However the on board sound capabilities have disappeared (the speakers were built in to the system). I have tried downloading new sound drivers but they are incompatible with ubuntu. Since linux is a OS for programmers are there any potential commands I can use to make the drivers understandable?

If you will not be able to use windows drivers on ubuntu (or at best it will be more trouble than it is worth). I'm honestly surprised that the audio is not working (what, if anything told you that it was not working and have you looked for audio settings?)

What kind of sound card do you have? I know it's integrated to the motherboard, but I'm curious to know the exact model.

If you don't know, can you at least give us the model number to the Dell?

its a dell optiplex 740 I think I saw 5.1 stereo if that counts for anything
