| True Techie | I replaced windows with Ubuntu Linux (www.ubuntulinux.org), and I downloaded a copy of Netzero for "lindows", and it is a .deb debian file, and it said "Cannot open file"... I really hate netzero, but its what I have to use until the end of the year, so is there any other software I can use that will connect? Is there any free ISPs that support linux? Any ideas? Thanks! |

| LOL, I really feel your pain. I signed a contract with CompuServe about 7 years ago so I could get a computer for 100 bucks from circuitcity. I had to use compuserve for 3 years. I really think that I lost my mind throughout those 3 years... Anyway, try getting a program called wvdial. This is a program for dialing ISP's that require proprietary software (like netzero). If this doesn't work, keep looking for software that will connect you... www.sourceforge.net

sudo dpkg -i /directory/wherever/whateverthefileis.deb If the file is on your desktop, it is at /home/username/Desktop/whateverfile.deb Unfortunately .deb files won't just 'double click' and open. You gotta get into the terminal. ![]()

| True Techie | Thanks for the help! You are right, qiranworms. Now my problem is that I have a winmodem, and I can't find it listed anywhere as being successfully configured as a "linmodem" so I'm going to have to wait until I can get a full hardware modem. Crappy part about it is I will be without Internet, because I can't get windows to reinstall. I popped in the Windows CD this morning so I could get online and figure stuff out, and I deleted the linux partition, created a new partition, formatted it using ntfs, let it copy its files, and when it reboots it says "Error loading operating system". I figured maybe it still had the linux bootloader on the boot sector, so I go into the repair console, and use fixboot and fixmbr, but still no luck... My computer guy said that he had the same exact problem last week, with the same processor as mine, so he swapped out processors with one he had lying around, and it installed. Once it was all installed, he put the old one back in and it worked fine, so he thinks it has to do with timing, but he has no definite answer for me since its new to him. Too bad I don't have cpu's lying around, hehe. Guess I'll be without Internet until my customer pays me for building his subwoofer enclosure. |
