Default Debian installion problem

i have read doc's. on it and stuff i went and tried 5 times to install it get top the point where i need to install xserver, i do that i then do /etc/init.d/kdm start. In which it goes black and comes back to the command line i thought the start screen would come up. So then i tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 tried to see what the problem was nothing again tried to start it nothing. then someone told me to do look in /var/log/xfree86.0.log and it should tell w\me what is wrong but then how do i fix it from there ?

Have you configured X11 to match your settings?

IIRC, you can't just run kdm nor xdm because X11 isn't started. Can you just startx?

EDIT: ...or maybe I'm wrong...looks like you CAN just start kdm. Don't know what I was thinking. Still, try just to startx.

Have you installed everything you need? A common mistake is not installing some fonts.
The safe way
apt-get install x-window-system-core
or
apt-get install x-window-system

Or xf86config, since that's what Debian uses.

I would make sure that your config is right....start x....and if that doesnt coming up then you know what your problem is right there.
