I just did a little googleing but most of what I found was older forum posts (05 an before) an the links the provided are now dead, what I am after is a guid on how to edit the boot splash screen image on Kubuntu but any generic guide to editing the boot splash on linux would be much appreciated.

I used USplash until I switched to openSuSE. You should be able to use that.
