Angry complain/rant /review FC1

I installed fedora core 1 a few days ago while I was waiting for mandrake 10 to arrive... its awful... I think redhat 9 is better. no joke. Installing things is a pain in the ***, and it doesnt come w/ python. Software banks are not very big for fc1 either. I must say that hardware support is quite good though. That was the nicest thing about it.

the xmms it comes w/ doesnt have any good codecs... it play .ogg or whatever. I can dl one, but thats besides the point. I couldnt get my yahoo account to work in the messaging client.

and probably most importanty, I couldnt update. The updater froze very time i tried to update! No joke!

Overall I think that the os is pretty ****ty to other modern distributions. Even compared to older distros.

Has anyone else used FC1? What do you think?
thanks (for reply and listening to my rant)
Al

i used it before but i got rid of it. i agree with xmms. i don't like it much. i use zinf.

and the updater has always been problematic for me even when i had RedHat. my new SuSE 9.1 Pro has no problems so far except some minor details which are my fault.

I cant play any mp3 or .mpg or .vid or .mov or .avi

or anything good

only .ogg

Is it easy to make those work in xmms, or should I try installing Zinf? Does Zinf work in Fedora Core 1?
thanks again for everything

Al

because of licensing issues, the mp3 encoder is not automatically included with xmms when you install it. i don't remember the URL but do a search and you'll find it.

you can download zinf at www.zinf.org. it was very easy to install.

fc2!!! hahaha, i haven't had any problems with it. but if your out of the fedora market, i'd probably use slackware or debian or suse....i disagree with mandrake...i've tried installing it a couple times and everything sucks....the install scripts suck....and it just made me mad...ahh o hellwell....have you tried fc2? or just fc1?

hahah, where do i start....well i tried installing on my laptop, first it would only let me use 800*600 reso  it didn't recognize the nic, the performance isn't that great....and installing some rpm's can be an all out nightmare (yes even worse than rh or fc)

then i guess i just got so mad at it i didn't take time to look at anything and just re-installed fc2. not really big problems, but with rh & fc i've not had to many problems...

the only thing that's making me mad right now is the mp3 licensing so no gnu/gpl apps (such as xmms) come with mp3 support, but can be downloaded quickly...

LOL.... well, I hope its not too bad... its taking over two weeks to arrive... lmao
yeah, the licenses are a pain.

I downloaded DivX and some other programs for FC1, and when I tried to open them with file roller, I got an error (this ONLY happens with tar.tar files)

do you know if mandrake 10 comes with an easy installer that I can dual boot w/?

Does it use grub? (i want to dual boot 2k and mandrake10)

thanks Shan
