Default Booting from external HDD

I might only have the option to boot Ubuntu Linux off of an external hard drive. So I have a few questions.
1.) Are there any disadvantages to booting off of an external HDD?
2.) Are there any specific external hdds that I cannot use on Linux? I thought that there were problems with USB devices in Linux.
3.) Will I be able to install Ubuntu normally and just choose the external hard drive to install on?

Most new ones will let you - it's the one more than 4 or 5 years old that you run into trouble with.
