Default Backup Problems!!

Hello,
Im trying to backup some files in Win98 before I go and partition my drive to install linux. When I insert a blank cd and try and write to it its telling me that "D:\ is not accessible, The device is not ready, Retry Cancel", as if there is no cd in the drive. Does anybody know how I can write to this drive? I have used this drive many times before for burning cds.
Also, how to i get into my BIOS at start-up so as to select a cd-rom drive for boot up rather than the already selected floppy-drive?
Hope somebody can help, cheers!!

check all connections on the cd drive, try it with a different brand of CD-R? does it have trouble reading cds?, to get into bios, its different for every brand, should usually tell you on the start up process, mines a dell and i use the delete key, my bro's got a gateway his is F1, compaqs and HPs are usually F10 i believe.
